Norsemen News · North names Jim Singelyn as Girls Swim Head Coach

Coach Singelyn has been coaching for over 20 years and brings a wealth of knowledge having coached at many different levels.  Some of his local stops include the Detroit Yacht Club, Ann Arbor Swim Club, Livonia Stevenson High School, the Grosse Pointe Gators, Regina HS and currently at his alma mater, De La Salle Collegiate in Warren.  Jim’s high School teams have consistently placed in the Top 10 at the MHSAA State Championships and are known for both high academic and athletic success.  Many of his swimmer’s have continued their swimming career’s in the NCAA.  Jim’s age group and high school kids are easily recognized for having great stroke technique and always having fun while reaching their goals.

Jim returned to De La Salle for the 2009-2010 season.  Entering his ninth year as coach the Pilots have returned the program back to the successes of the late 1980’s.  Jim’s teams have won the Macomb County Championships 5 years straight, finished in the top 3 of the CHSL eight years in a row.  The Pilots were state meet runner up in 2016.  Coach Singelyn Has been named Macomb County Coach of the Year three times.  He was named High School Coach of the Year for boys in 2016 and the Michigan High School Coaches Association Coach of the year for Swimming in 2016. Singelyn’s swimmers have received accolades of All American And All State many times over the years and has also coached three Olympic Trials Qualifiers.

The coaching philosophy of Coach Singelyn is pretty simple.  “Swimming is the most grueling sport on the planet as far as conditioning goes; it’s my job to make it fun, because when swimmers are having fun they get faster and their grades go up, with swimming there is a direct correlation with how hard you work and one’s success and this can easily be applied to the classroom and in life”.

We are excited to have Jim as our new Girls Head Coach, and welcome him to the GP North Community!
